Ricoh GR IIIx Overview
RICOH GR IIIx – come closer to the subject
The Ricoh GR concept can be described in a few words: image performance without compromise.
The GR IIIx is based on the original model of this series, the GR III. Difference to this, the GR IIIx has a more moderate focal length, which is considered more of a standard lens with 40 mm (equivalent to 35 mm format) than the original GR III with its angle of view, which corresponds more to a 28 mm lens in 35 mm format.
The GR III and the GR IIIx are identically equipped and differ only in the lens.
The result is one of the most powerful snapshot cameras, with excellent image quality, outstanding compactness and the more it is used, the less you want to give it out of your hands.
A mix of the highest-quality components is responsible for this. One of the main ingredients is the lens, which is equipped with our unique optical technology that always ensures high image quality. The RICOH GR IIIx is equipped with a 26.1 mm GR lens that offers a 40 mm lens equivalent angle of view in 35 mm format, which closely matches the photographer's effective field of view.
Lenses made of glass with a high refractive index and low dispersion, as well as aspherical, high-precision moulded glass lenses, are optimally placed in the lens construction to suppress optical distortion and chromatic aberrations to the absolute limit and achieve a high degree of sharpness. This results in images that are sharp, brilliant and rich in contrast across the entire image field, even at full aperture.
RICOH GR IIIx - Details
Image processing perfection
The GR IIIx is equipped with a high-resolution APS-C format CMOS image sensor with approx. 24.24 effective megapixels. This high-resolution sensor uses high-resolution detail reproduction of the high-resolution lens and is optimised for the best possible image quality, even for large-format prints.
Another important component in the ‘GR ENGINE 6’. The image processor improves the high image quality of the GR IIIx for even greater detail, while also providing improved responsiveness and functionality for autofocus and filming.
The image processor is supported by an ‘accelerator unit’. This reduces noise and achieves excellent resolution and colour reproduction across the entire sensitivity range.
The main components of the GR concept are: optimising image quality, snapshot functions and portability. The GR IIIx is always at the ready. It masters dark shooting conditions thanks to a maximum sensitivity of ISO 102400 and IBIS. This Shake Reduction minimises blurring on three axes (yaw, pitch and roll), and delivers exposure reliability of 4 EV.
Hybrid AF with Focus modes that fit versatile subjects and shooting styles and Face/eye detect autofocus to assist portrait shooting
The AF system is a hybrid of image-plane phase comparison and contrast detection. The advantages of fast focusing in image-plane phase comparison AF and focusing precision in contrast AF are combined. The usual problem of contrast AF, the search for focus peaks, has been reduced to achieve the fast shooting performance required for street photography.
A scope of focus functions are available for different requirements. However, if necessary, it is also possible to focus manually, and with the unique ‘Full Press Snap’ function, you will never miss a shot again and can capture sudden situations almost instantly.
Another feature that guarantees spontaneous snapshots is the camera's extremely short start-up time. After just 0.8 seconds from switching on, the camera is ready to shoot.
Face/eye detect autofocus to assist portrait shooting
The camera detects faces or eyes and focuses. When the face or eye is detected and in-focused, the focusing point is framed. By using this setting, when you want to focus on a subject instead of faces, simply switch the focus mode without turning face/eye detect off.
Macro mode, enabling close-up shots with the camera alone
Simply press the macro button to take close-up shots using autofocus. The focus range is 6 to 12 cm from the front of the lens. You can enjoy impressive close-up photos with rich bokeh effects.
Universal crop mode
By using the crop mode, you can take pictures equivalent to 3 lenses in a single camera. Images are captured with an angle of view equivalent to a 50 mm or 71mm focal length
By using the GR III and GR IIIx together, you can cover focal lengths from wide-angle to medium telephoto, because the GR IIIx has options for an angle of view corresponding to a focal length of 50 mm or 71 mm in addition to the basic focal length of 40 mm.
And with the optionally available GT-2 tele conversion lens, the angle of view is even extended to an equivalent focal length of 60 mm
Capture star trails
This setting option is specially designed for capturing star trails. You can set star trails in 10-minute intervals (up to 24 hours), or you can select an unlimited recording time. You can also make many other settings, such as saving intermediate images, setting the release time and much more.
Beautiful images with multi-exposure
This function lets you take pictures and overlay them directly. The previous shots appear in a transparent display so you can check the composition while overlaying another image. You can change the exposure parameter and take the next shot, or simply stop.
Built-in ND filter
Unlike the HDF models, this camera is equipped with a built-in ND filter that reduces the light by two exposure levels, e.g. to defocus the background even when shooting bright outdoor scenes at maximum aperture or to capture the movement of the subject with a slow shutter speed.
RAW processing in-camera without using a PC.
RAW data can be processed directly in the camera and saved as a JPEG file. You no longer need a PC to implement your ideas directly.
Expand your range of expression
You can also express your creativity through various image control modes.
You can use the eleven basic settings or develop your own image recipes in which you can adjust various parameters. You can individually specify the following settings: saturation, hue, adjustment of high/low key, contrast, contrast (lights and shadows), sharpness, shading, clarity, toning, filter effect, grain effect, HDR tone and colour tone, and you can even access these directly via the mode dial at any time using one of the user settings, U1/U2/U3.
